Alicia Keys and Jay-Z Sing ‘Empire State of Mind’ at 2024 Tony Awards

Keys, 43, joins the cast of hell’s Kitchen for a live performance at the awards ceremony on Sunday, June 16. hell’s Kitchen, loosely A medley was performed at the awards ceremony, using Keys’ discography based on her life story of growing up in New York City. The song also featured Keys and Jay-Z singing the song “Empire State of Mind”.

Keys wore a black two-piece shirt while singing the track, as well as a large Gucci coat and gold jewelry. After encouraging the audience to raise their hands, she said, “Are we in New York City at the Tony Awards?”

Keys went on to say that she “had to do something crazy” because the Tony Awards ceremony was held in her hometown of NYC. Jay-Z, 54, then came on stage to perform his part of the rap wearing a Louis Vuitton jacket and backwards hat.

He joked at the end of the event, “Brooklyn, New York City, tonight at the Tonys.”

Jay-Z and Keys originally released their duet in 2009, dedicating it to New York City.

And for whatever reason, the people that represent me didn’t tell me about the record,” Keys said, recalling the recording process on the “Drink Champs” podcast in December 2021. “I don’t know why. It created a whole new thing for me to make sure I was in front of my s–t. Because there are so many people, you trust them to handle your stuff and do your thing for you and you don’t know what’s coming back to you or what’s not. Can you imagine if ‘Empire’ had never come to me?”

“Empire State of Mind” is one of Keys’ songs hell’s KitchenThe musical, which opened on Broadway in April alongside “No One,” “Fallen” and “Girl on Fire,” is the most nominated production of the 2024 season, earning 13 nominations for Best Musical, Best Direction of a Musical and Best Choreography. Actors Maleah Joi Moon, Brandon Victor Dixon, Shoshana Bean and Kecia Lewis were all honored for their individual performances.

“I’m so nervous. It’s unbelievable [and] I’m so grateful,” Keys said of the show’s 13 Tony nominations at an event TODAY with Hoda and Jenna last month. “It’s amazing! The team and creative partnerships involved in this show are amazing.” [are] Fantastic. … There’s a lot of expertise. You go there, you see a complete, beautiful story and you get lost in it.”

Keys also wrote several new songs specifically for hell’s KitchenI am telling you Today Co-hosts Hoda Kotb and Jenna Bush Hager said the experience was “really cool.”

“There were such distinctive parts [and] In May, she recalled that there were moments when it felt like ‘we know we need a song that encapsulates this moment’. “I think when I’m writing, that’s just how I write.
