All the major announcements worth watching from Summer Game Fest 2024

The Summer Game Fest kicked off on Friday with a two-hour showcase featuring host and gaming impresario Geoff Keighley taking potshots at the team. Video game developers in trouble For Publishers and developers are big And Small,

“This year has been tumultuous and difficult, with company layoffs and studio closures disappointing us all,” Keighley said in his opening statement.

Then, presenting a title card for what viewers should expect over the next two hours, he showed a list of the top 10 selling games of all time on Steam. He said two could be considered big budget, big marketing console-style games. The other eight come from independent, medium-sized or even solo development teams.

“I look at this list and I’m inspired that new ideas, new teams and new creators can and will succeed,” Keighley said. “It’s a reminder to big companies that they have to treat their developers right, because there are many paths to stability and success today, and that’s what makes this industry so great,” Keighley added.

And with that said, let’s take a look at the big announcements and reveals from Summer Game Fest 2024’s two-hour-long showcase.

Lego Horizon Adventures

Yes, LEGO’s next crossover is with Sony’s award-winning Horizon IP. Or maybe Sony’s post-apocalyptic canon, whose most recent release was 2022’s Horizon: Forbidden West, is crossing over with the latter. Either way, this looks to be a light-hearted take on an otherwise very serious (and critically acclaimed) adventure series for PlayStation. It will launch on PlayStation 5 this holiday season.

A hardcore multiplayer survival shooter, No More Room in Hell 2, a sequel to the 2011 Source engine mod, will launch for PC on Steam and the Epic Games Store by Halloween. It features permadeath and lots of swearing.

Harry Potter Quidditch Champions

If Quidditch were a real sport, the player enjoying it on a broomstick during the sport’s inception in the 2001 film Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone would probably be a retired champion today. It finally gets the triple-A treatment with Quidditch Champions. It’s noticeably absent from the 2023 films. Hogwarts Legacy (The Headmaster of Hogwarts has announced that the Quidditch season has been cancelled for safety reasons.) Quidditch is back, the first Harry Potter title dedicated to the sport since 2003. Quidditch World CupThe game will launch on September 3 on PlayStation 4, PS5, Nintendo Switch, and Windows PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store.

Cuffbust

Cuffbust is a prison-break rogue who needs to — well, see for yourself and then ask the inevitable question, “What did I just see.” You have cartoon characters mumbling Simlish while plotting how to blow up toilets and get out of the joint. Count me in. It’s all the work of the same developer, Gavin Eisenbeglz. Players can cooperate or thwart each other’s plans.

Star Wars Outlaws

already Detailed information on Ubisoft Forward On Monday, the Summer Game Fest offered a narrative teaser Star Wars OutlawThe open-world space pirate adventure announced last year. Star Wars Outlaws pulls on the oldest and most romantic thread in the space adventure’s continuity, and will premiere on August 30. Tune in on Monday, June 10 for full details.

Civilization VII

It was already leaked on FridaySummer Game Fest confirmed that the next installment of the iconic strategy title is coming in August 2025, with Sid Meier himself following up a debut trailer with a message for longtime fans of the 30-year-old strategy title.

Batman: Arkham Shadows

This Meta Quest VR game takes players to Gotham City to face a new threat: the Rat King. Jim Gordon looks willing to violate the due process rights of some suspects to stop the threat; Batman, as always, is willing to go even further in his vigilante exploits. Batman: Arkham Shadows launches exclusively for the Meta Quest headset this fall.

Tears of Metal

Billed as a roguelike co-op, hack-n-slash, Tears of Metal harks back to the finest traditions of Scotland, starting with going out with your clan and beating up a lot of people with a very big sword. In Scotland’s defense, it’s a fine tradition. Tears of Metal does not yet have a release date.

Dragon Ball Sparking Zero

If Tears of Metal didn’t appeal to you, there’s always Dragon Ball Z’s next fighting game. Tear up the skies in the ultimate Dragon Ball showdown with Dragon Ball Sparking Zero, launching on October 11 for PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X.

Blumhouse’s Horror Games

Blumhouse, which produces popular horror films such as Get Out, M3Gun and Five Nights at Freddy’s, is also going to try its hand at video games with several titles coming out in the next few days: Crisol Theatre of Idols, Grave Seasons, Sleep Awake, Fear the Spotlight, The Simulation and Project C. Release dates and platforms have not been announced.

Alan Wake II’s Night Springs expansion

Featuring three fan-favorite playable characters, Remedy Entertainment is introducing the first expansion content for the 2023 horror/mystery adventure on Saturday, June 8. Alan Wake II is available on PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X.

Skate

Once again, fans of Electronic Arts’ skateboarding franchise, which last launched in 2010 and whose reboot was announced for 2021, got an ironic, f-the-man live-action trailer, some “pre-pre-alpha footage,” and no launch date, but the promise of console testing sometime this fall.

Slitherhead

First announced in 2021, Slitherhead is a horror adventure from Silent Hill creator Keiichiro Toyama, who founded Bokeh, an independent game studio, in 2020. It will launch on November 8 for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Windows PC, Xbox Series X.
