AstraZeneca acknowledges covid vaccine can lead to rare side effect TSS in court; Here’s what we know – ET HealthWorld | Pharma

New Delhi: Britain’s pharmaceutical giant AstraZeneca has acknowledged that its COVID-19 vaccine may cause a rare side effect called thrombosis with thrombocytopenia syndrome ,tts, The admission comes as the company faces a lawsuit alleging the vaccine caused serious harm and deaths, according to The Telegraph.

TTS is thrombosis with thrombocytopenia syndrome, which is basically a clot in the blood vessels of the brain or elsewhere with a low platelet count. It also occurs in very rare cases after certain types of vaccines and for other reasons. According to WHO, adenovirus vector vaccines in particular have rarely been associated with this condition. Although Covid vaccines have prevented many deaths, reports of these extremely rare but potentially serious immune-mediated events have also been published in reputable journals, said Dr Rajeev Jayadevan, co-chairman of the National IMA COVID Task Force. , Kerala said.

AstraZenecawho collaborated with University of Oxford In order to develop a vaccine, it is currently embroiled in legal proceedings initiated by the victims and their families. One such case involves father-of-two Jamie Scott, who took legal action after suffering a blood clot that left him unable to work. Scott claims that after vaccination in April 2021, he suffered a “blood clot and hemorrhage in the brain,” resulting in permanent brain injury.

Scott’s wife Kate said, “The medical community has long accepted that vaccine-induced immune thrombocytopenia and thrombosis (VITT) is caused by the vaccine.” However, AstraZeneca informed Scott’s lawyers in May 2023 that they did not accept TTS as being induced by the vaccine at moderate levels.

In a legal document submitted to the High Court, the multinational pharmaceutical company admitted, “It is recognized that the AZ vaccine may, in very rare cases, cause TTS. The causal mechanism is not known.”

Kate has demanded an apology and fair compensation for her family and other affected families, stressing that the admission took three years. “The truth is on our side and we are not going to give up,” he said.

Kate, the wife of one victim, told The Telegraph, “The medical world has long accepted that VITT was caused by the vaccine. It is only AstraZeneca that has raised the question of whether Jamie’s condition was caused by the jab.” She sees AstraZeneca’s entry as progress after a three-year fight and demands an apology and fair compensation for her family and others affected.

What is TTS (Thrombosis with Thrombocytopenia Syndrome)?
Thrombosis with thrombocytopenia syndrome (TTS) is an extremely rare condition characterized by the formation of blood clots (thrombosis) and low platelet counts (thrombocytopenia). This is also known as vaccine-induced immune thrombotic thrombocytopenia (VITT).

Thrombosis occurs when a blood clot forms in a blood vessel, which can obstruct blood flow. Thrombocytopenia is a condition where the number of platelets in the blood is reduced. Platelets play an important role in clotting, which helps prevent excessive bleeding.

What is the relation between TTS and? covid vaccine,
The association between TTS and the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine was discovered after the vaccine’s rollout. Researchers found an association between the vaccine and VITT. Lawyers for the claimants argue that VITT is a subgroup of TTS, a distinction that AstraZeneca does not accept.

51 cases have been filed in the High Court, with victims and their families seeking compensation of more than £100 million. AstraZeneca expressed sympathy for those who lost loved ones or reported health problems. It stressed that patient safety is its top priority, and regulatory authorities have strict standards to ensure the safe use of all medicines, including vaccines.

AstraZeneca also cooperated Serum Institute of India (SII), the world’s largest vaccine producer, will supply the vaccine to the Government of India.
