Beyond Good & Evil anniversary edition announced — and, typically, screwed up

Ubisoft on Thursday revealed the official launch date for Beyond Good & Evil: 20th Anniversary Edition with a new trailer. The re-release will be out June 25 on PlayStation 4 and PS5; Xbox One and Series X; Windows PC (via Epic Games Store) and Nintendo Switch.

But, in keeping with Ubisoft’s corporate, perfunctory handling of a cult classic crowd-pleasing film for the past 20 years, this film also couldn’t go without a major misstep, or a later retraction.

First things first, this is the real, authentic trailer, which was obviously leaked ahead of time. Unintentional post on X About 20 minutes before the appointed time:

The trailer was released about 20 minutes ahead of schedule when someone accidentally pressed the “send” button on a prepared tweet on the Ubisoft X account. This is reminiscent of an incident in November, when someone accidentally pressed the “send” button and A playable, evolving version of the anniversary remaster of Beyond Good & Evil has been published For the Ubisoft+ subscription service.

Its re-release hadn’t been announced at the time, but the leak and failure to contain it forced the publisher to announce that it would be releasing soon – even if that meant months later than the 20th anniversary of Beyond Good & Evil, which launched for PlayStation 2 on November 11, 2003.

Beyond Good & Evil is widely praised for its varied gameplay systems, its entertaining characters and storylines, and its visionary approach to video game storytelling.

And yet it seems so One of those franchise unicorns for which no amount of fan enthusiasm can actually lead to a proper sequel in 20 years, because the publicly traded publisher avoids it More traditional blockbuster IP And Mining more than 13 times To attract the attention of fickle investors who would not invest in them.

What’s the latest on Beyond Good and Evil 2?

During Ubisoft’s big E3 2017 review, Beyond Good & Evil fans got a dramatic announcement of a sequel, and Ubisoft president Yves Guillemot He got a lot of applause for this,

Fans haven’t heard anything over the past seven years. Instead, they’ve gotten a half-hearted run of a remaster of the original game – which, by the way, was already remastered for high-definition consoles during the Obama administration.

Still, the new Beyond Good & Evil, updated for modern hardware, beats the alternative, which isn’t BG&E on any current platform. But Ubisoft really needs to know how tenuous its bond with its fans is, after it has tormented them for seven years with amateur-hour antics like today’s.
