Do you see a glimpse of your father in Grace?

Oh my god, yes. She is such a relentless force of nature. Seriously, if she’s not running around, it means she’s sleeping. There’s no “off” button. She gets that strength and energy from Irwin by her side. If my father were still alive, we would never have seen Grace – he would have taken her and said, “Let’s go up the mountain and see these animals!”

Do you talk to Grace about that?

I’ve always said I want to make sure Grace knows Dad. We have a big picture of him, and every night, we do our quiet-welcome ritual. Chandler, Grace and I sit under the stars and talk about what we’re grateful for. Then we tell the story and say goodnight to Grandpa Crocodile, as she calls him. She started doing that one night; she says, “Goodnight, Grandpa Crocodile,” because he’s feeding a crocodile in the picture.

She has no fear when it comes to animals. I’m scared of wasps and bugs – I’m not scared of them, but I don’t want a cockroach to climb on my face. She loves bugs. Every day she says, “Mommy, let’s go look for bugs.”

She is the most beautiful, hilarious and wonderful soul. She is three years old, so she is curious about everything and is very inquisitive and fascinated by the world. I wish adults were like that too! I don’t know where people lose that sense of magic, but watching her and how much she enjoys colours and sights and sounds is a wonderful reminder.

In 2023, you spoke openly about your endometriosis diagnosis and surgery. Why did you decide to share it?

When I shared my story, I had no idea how many people would share their struggles. Everyone said the same thing, “We didn’t feel seen; we didn’t feel acknowledged.” We need more awareness for women’s health.

Can you tell us about your experience with endometriosis?

Some people say it’s only during your period that you feel bad. For me, it was every day. You just don’t know if it’s a fertility issue or if your health is deteriorating. I had all kinds of tests, MRIs, blood tests, you name it. Everything came back negative. Doctors would say, “We don’t know what’s wrong with you.” Eventually I found a wonderful surgeon who said, “I think you have endometriosis, but the only way to find out is to operate.”

my crippling fear [was] Going into surgery and not knowing if they would find anything, because it’s such an invisible disease. So if they didn’t find anything, how would I be able to live the next 50 years feeling this way every day? Has this brought any change in your family planning?

After Grace was born the doctors said, “We don’t know how you managed,” because I suffered so much from endometriosis. My ovary was almost taken over by a cyst. She’s our miracle. So, you never know what the future holds. I don’t know what life is going to throw at us.
