Calling on the Transitional Government of South Sudan to Urgently Open Political and Civic Space – United States Department of State

Matthew Miller, department spokesman

The United States is deeply concerned by legislation passed by the Transitional National Assembly in South Sudan that would give the National Security Service the power to arrest and detain without a warrant. Enactment of this law will further impoverish the political and civic space in South Sudan. The transitional government should take immediate action to create an environment in which South Sudanese can express their views openly and without fear.
