State Department Counselor Derek H. Chollet spoke with Bahrain’s Foreign Ministry Under Secretary for Political Affairs Dr. Abdullah bin Ahmed Al Khalifa about the proposed resolution to achieve a permanent ceasefire in Gaza and secure the release of all hostages. Counselor Chollet emphasized that the resolution would greatly benefit both Palestinians and Israelis, increase humanitarian assistance in Gaza, enable the return of displaced persons to Gaza areas, and allow international reconstruction efforts to begin. He reiterated that Hamas should accept the resolution without delay. The Counselor emphasized the importance of supporting this resolution as a means of building a more peaceful and stable Middle East region, including a clear path to a two-State solution where Israelis and Palestinians can live together in peace and security. He also recognized Bahrain’s leadership role in promoting peace throughout the region as chair of the Arab League this year. They also noted the importance of the Houthis immediately ceasing their attacks on international shipping and thanked Bahrain for its cooperation on the security of the Red Sea. The Counselor commended the ongoing close bilateral cooperation, in line with the Comprehensive Security Integration and Prosperity Agreement (C-SIPA) signed by the United States and Bahrain in September 2023.
