Retro-style RPGs are very popular, especially on the Nintendo Switch. We’re not talking masterpieces like Baldur’s Gate 3 or even old Zelda games, but your regular, fun, story-driven pixel-based RPG.
Well with the help of the incoming with RPG Maker which is releasing for the Switch on October 11th, you’ll get the chance to create your own Switch-based RPG.
RPG Maker has been around in one form or another for many years, and the oddly named RPG Maker would be its latest version.
We’re assuming the WITH part of the name comes from the included collaboration tools that let you create your own RPG with other people online which is pretty cool because one of your friends can be in charge of the story, another can be in charge of the dialogue, and even another friend can organize your game’s maps. Sounds pretty fun.
The online aspect of the game will also allow you to play games made by other creators, opening up a never-ending world of new RPGs to play (disclaimer, some will be absolute crap).
In terms of assets, the game will have everything you need to create a fantasy or science-fiction-style RPG, and there are plans to deliver more assets as DLC. If it’s anything like the current RPG Maker ecosystem for PC, these will be plentiful.
In the future a version of RPG Maker WITH will also be released for both PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5, but so far the only date for that is a fairly vague 2025.
If you’ve always wanted to make your own game but don’t know where to begin, RPG Maker is a great starting point to see what captures your imagination. The new audience on the Nintendo Switch is interesting and it will be fun to see what people can create once it’s released.
