Disinfection-solidification system It can automatically disinfect and stabilize decomposable pathogenic biomedical waste such as blood, urine, saliva, sputum and laboratory disposables, as well as impart a pleasant natural aroma to otherwise foul-smelling biomedical waste. This technology has the potential to have far-reaching implications in the global biomedical sector, as it can address the limitations of conventional techniques, including energy-intensive incineration.

This will be verified through pilot scale installation and accompanying research and development. AIIMSThere will be a technical meeting between the two institutions to finalise the specifications before starting the proposed study.

Dr. C. Ananda Dharmakrishnan, Director, CSIR-NIIST said, “The technology we have developed for converting pathogenic biomedical waste into value-added soil additives is a perfect example of the concept of ‘waste to wealth’.”

Biomedical waste, which contains potentially infectious and pathogenic material, presents a significant challenge for proper management and disposal. According to a 2020 report by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), about 774 tonnes of biomedical waste is generated daily in India.
