Cyclist Katie Archibald Breaks Her Leg Weeks Before 2024 Olympics

Katie Archibald will not be traveling to Paris 2024 OlympicsOn Thursday, the British cyclist revealed on Instagram that she would not be able to represent Great Britain at the Paris Games after breaking her leg during a crash.

“I tripped on a ladder in the garden and somehow managed to dislocate my ankle; broke my tibia and fibula; and tore two ligaments off the bone. What a mess,” she wrote alongside photos of herself in hospital. “This happened on Tuesday, and I’ve been in full princess mode ever since (considering it took a whole team of A&E doctors and nurses to get Cinderella’s foot back in line with the slipper).”

Archibald has already undergone surgery to put back together bones and reattach ligaments damaged in the accident, and will soon be recovering at home.

“A big thank you to the wonderful doctors, nurses, radiographers, porters, physios, surgeons and so many others at Manchester Royal Infirmary,” she wrote. “Apologies for what this means to the Olympic team, which I have been told I have had no role in. I am still coming to terms with the news but thought it would be better to confirm it publicly rather than leave it to rumours (triple hazard and such).”

“I may be back with more updates, may be off social media for a while – TBC. Bye for now,” Archibald, 30, told her followers at the end of her message.

British Cycling reacted to the news X commented that, according to medical advice, Archibald “would be unable to take part in the forthcoming Olympic Games.”

“We understand the heartbreak Katie has been through as a result of her injury, and we also sympathize with the cruel way in which she was denied the chance to win a medal in Paris,” the account wrote. “Our focus now is on providing Katie with the best possible support during her recovery, and we know the entire cycling community will be with her every step of the way.”
