Delhi children’s hospital fire: Hospital licence had expired, doctors not qualified for newborn care, says cops – ET HealthWorld

New Delhi: Police investigation has revealed serious flaws in police functioning. Newborn Baby Care Hospital A massive fire broke out in Vivek Vihar on Saturday night, resulting in the death of six newborn babies.

The investigation revealed that the hospital’s license had expired on March 31 this year, yet it continued to function without any hindrance. Moreover, it appeared that the doctors lacked the required qualifications and expertise to take care of newborns who require intensive neonatal care.

According to DCP (Shahdara) Surender Chaudhary, their investigation revealed that the doctors only had BAMS (Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine) degrees. The hospital also did not have fire extinguishers and emergency exits, which are crucial in case of any unforeseen incident.

The police are also investigating the possibility of illegal filling of oxygen cylinders at the hospital. The investigation was launched after 32 oxygen cylinders were found at the spot and neighbours reported suspicious activities. The hospital did not have an NOC from the hospital. fire DepartmentBut the arrested owner claimed it was not needed as the height of the hospital building was less than 15 metres. The fire department plans to assess the height of the building on Monday to ascertain if an NOC was indeed required.

Regarding the expired licence, a senior official said, “The licence issued by the Director General of Health Services (which comes under the Delhi government) was valid only till March 31. Even as per the expired licence, the hospital was supposed to remain operational for only five beds. However, there were 12 newborn babies admitted there at the time of the incident.”

Police said initial investigations revealed that the hospital had four branches, the others being in Punjabi Bagh, Faridabad and Gurgaon. They will also inspect these centres. Accused owner Naveen Kichi has claimed to have an MD degree in paediatrics while his wife Jagriti, who is a dentist, was also involved in running the hospital.

The police is now focusing on finding out the cause of the fire. Some eyewitnesses said that the generator and a nearby pole caught fire, which led to the incident. The police have contacted the Delhi government. Electricity Department A team of experts has been sent to ascertain the cause of the fire. A police officer said, “Electric inspection report is being taken from the electric inspector. A report is also being taken from the Delhi Fire Service.” The Delhi Medical Council has also been contacted as part of the ongoing investigation.
