On Monday, Zafarpur was the hottest area in the city at 46.9 degrees Celsius, while Pitampura was 46.5 degrees Celsius, Ayanagar 46.4 degrees Celsius, Pusa and Najafgarh 46.3 degrees Celsius and Palam 46 degrees Celsius.

The weather department has predicted that similar conditions will continue till Tuesday. An official of the Indian Meteorological Department said that despite some relief on Wednesday, the maximum temperature in Safdarjung will remain above 40 degrees Celsius.

The maximum and minimum temperatures on Tuesday are likely to hover around 45 and 33 degrees Celsius respectively. “The sky will be clear on Tuesday. Heatwave conditions are likely at most places and severe heatwave conditions in some areas as well as heatwave conditions at night in many areas. Strong winds are likely during the day and at times gusty winds, gusting up to 30-40 kmph,” the official said.

A heatwave is recorded when the maximum temperature is above 40 degrees Celsius and the departure is above 4.5 degrees. For a severe heatwave, either the maximum temperature should be above 45 degrees Celsius or the departure should be above 6.5 degrees. Hot night conditions are observed when the maximum temperature is above 40 degrees Celsius and the departure of the minimum temperature is above 4.5 degrees.

The city’s air quality remained in the moderate category. The air quality index on a scale of 0 to 500 was 169, while a day earlier it was 197. Both are in the moderate category.
