Elon Musk threatens to ban Apple devices over OpenAI integration

Elon Musk It is said at X He said he would ban Apple devices at his companies if Apple goes ahead with plans to integrate Siri with OpenAI’s ChatGPT, announced at WWDC24.

“If Apple integrated OpenAI at the OS level, Apple devices would be banned in my companies. This is an unacceptable security breach,” he added. “And visitors would have to check their Apple devices at the door, where they would be placed in a Faraday cage.”

Musk has even gone so far as to say that Reply to Tim CookExpressing his displeasure, the Apple CEO said, “I don’t want this. Either stop this horrible spyware or all Apple devices will be banned from my companies’ premises.”

What is the actual integration between Siri and OpenAI?

However, it appears that this response from Musk is due to a misunderstanding about how the Siri-OpenAI integration works. Apple Intelligence At its conference this week, several changes will be made to Siri. One of these changes will be the ability for the assistant to identify when a larger and more complex answer may be needed and provide the user with the option to send their question to OpenAI’s ChatGPT. The OS level integration that Musk is concerned about does not appear to exist.

Other Apple apps will also have the option to take advantage of OpenAI’s features, but it will remain an option for users to use if they wish. “Of course, you have control over when ChatGPT is used and you will be asked before any of your information is shared. ChatGPT integration will come to iOS 18 iPadOS 18 and macOS Sequoia later this year,” said Craig Federighi, Apple’s senior vice president of software engineering, during the keynote at WWDC24.

OpenAI has also confirmed it in a blog poststating that “requests are not stored by OpenAI, and users’ IP addresses are obfuscated. Users can also choose to connect their ChatGPT account, which means their data preferences will be enforced under ChatGPT’s policies.”

However, Elon Musk doesn’t seem too concerned with the reality of the matter. Another post on XHe added, “It’s patently absurd that Apple isn’t smart enough to create its own AI, yet is somehow able to claim that OpenAI will protect your security and privacy! Apple has no idea what’s really happening once they hand your data over to OpenAI. They’re ripping you off.”

In response to this post, a community note has surfaced to clarify the truth, stating that “Apple has developed its own fundamental models that run on the device (locally) and have approximately 3 billion parameters. For tasks that require more computing, Apple uses either private cloud compute (open to verification for privacy) or OpenAI with additional verification.”
