Abu Dhabi: Board of directors of Emirates Drug Establishment (EDE), held its fourth meeting since its establishment late last year, to review and develop the key steps to be taken to regulate and manage the UAE’s healthcare and pharmaceutical sectors – all aimed at reinforcing the UAE’s reputation as a global and regional hub for the medical industry.

The meeting was chaired by Dr. Thibin Ahmed Al Zeyoudi, Minister of State for Foreign Trade and Chairman of the Board of Directors of EDE, and attended by Dr. Maha Taiseer, Vice-Chairman of the Board, Dr. Fatima Mohammed Hilal Al Kaabi, Director-General of EDE, as well as board members Dr. Issa Abdul Fattah Kazim, Bader Salim Al Ulama, Dr. Amer Ahmed Sharif, Dr. Farhan Malak and Professor Chris Evans. Ahmed Al Rumaithi has recently joined the board as a representative of the UAE youth.

During the meeting, the Board of Directors discussed the development of plans to establish various special committees to enhance EDE’s operational efficiency.

Attendees also reviewed the latest developments regarding plans to integrate the activities of all relevant government agencies and services, including the transfer of oversight of over 160 services from the Ministry of Health and Community Prevention and the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment to EDE.

Dr Thani said that EDE is continuing its work to establish a fully integrated organisational structure that will regulate and manage all healthcare and pharmaceutical activities in the UAE.

It aims to raise standards, foster innovation and encourage collaboration in advanced research, thereby boosting the UAE’s economy. healthcare industry To be in line with global best practices.

Al Zeyoudi said, “We are focused on developing EDE’s institutional, organisational and administrative structure, which will support the integration of relevant government agencies and services into our mandate. Dr. Fatima Al Kaabi, Director-General of EDE, said that they are working on a plan to implement the Board of Directors’ previous recommendations, including establishing EDE’s organisational structure and appointing a highly skilled and experienced team to oversee its continuous improvement. Al Kaabi said, “EDE is working to establish its organisational structure, which will help us achieve our strategic goals, raise standards and accelerate the expansion of our country’s healthcare and pharmaceutical sectors, enhance their contribution to the well-being of UAE citizens, as well as contribute to sustainable economic growth.”

The UAE Cabinet approved the formation of a board of directors for the Emirates Drug Establishment in December 2023.

The board, which will serve a three-year term, is tasked with overseeing the mandate of regulating and managing all functions of the federal institution. medical products At the national level.

The organisation’s jurisdiction extends across the country, including free zones, and covers a wide range of products.

These include pharmaceuticals, medical devices, health care products, nutritional supplements, cosmetics, veterinary preparations, fertilizers, agricultural conditioners, plant growth regulators, pesticides and products from genetically modified organisms.

The Council of Ministers order-law allows the inclusion of any other medical product.
