2024 is struggling to compete with last year’s impressive box office numbers … 2 expected blockbusters are underperforming over Memorial Day weekend, which is historically bad.
Comscore reports that both “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” and “The Garfield Movie” failed to impress this holiday weekend … earning just $32 million and $31.1 million, respectively.
Though “Furiosa” found itself in the No. 1 spot … its box office total was quite different than “The Little Mermaid” last year. For the record, the live-action remake earned $117 million in its opening weekend.
Don’t forget “Top Gun: Maverick” which came out the year before that… which grossed a record-breaking $160 million in its opening weekend – which many credited to “Top Gun: Maverick.” Tom Cruise The film is being made to save the theatre business which has closed due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Anya Taylor-Joy-The doomed ‘Mad Max’ prequel is reportedly the lowest-grossing No. 1 film over Memorial Day weekend in 29 years — ‘Casper’ still holds that title with its mere $22.5 million opening in 1995. Now ‘Furiosa’ is in second place … oof.
This is part of a general trend so far in 2024 … This year’s box office numbers have been relatively slow for the first few months, with star-studded films like “IF” and “The Fall Guy” getting off to disappointing starts.
“Dune: Part Two” has been the exception so far … grossing $81.5 million in its first weekend in theaters — but viral popcorn buckets may have helped it along.
Hopefully things will improve this summer, when Marvel’s “Deadpool & Wolverine” hits theaters in July… $8 million in pre-sale tickets have already been sold, so so far it’s looking promising.
Marvel might have to save the day once again… because Anya and her team aren’t doing too well.
