The PlayStation 4, launched in 2013, has been released, but that doesn’t mean gamers have abandoned the console just yet. During its latest earnings call, Sony revealed The console has sold 59 million units.
But this statistic comes with a big caveat: PlayStation Network has a total of 118 million monthly active users (MAUs), and is growing 9% year over year. This means that at least half of the platform’s current user base is loyal to the PS4, and they have not yet upgraded their console.
While Sony has also reported that the PS5 is in the second half of its life cycle, it seems that Sony Chief Financial Officer Hiroki Totoki remains optimistic, as he said in the earnings call that “the console generation overlap will be well documented.” “And MAU will continuously work towards growth.”
There are a lot of reasons why users are reluctant to give up their PS4, but a big reason is probably the price. The price of the PS5 has not dropped since its launch in November 2020. Whatever happens, the price of PS5s has increased some areas, Coupled with the fact that there are no major game releases on the horizon specifically for that console, there is little incentive for players to drop that kind of cash.
When is PS6 coming?
While the PS5 is reaching the second half of its life cycle, that doesn’t mean we can expect PS6 release date anytime soon. In fact, the earliest we can expect to see the PS6 is probably late 2027 and 2028.
We made this estimate because Microsoft previously offered to keep Activision Blizzard games on the platform until 2027. With that time frame in mind, it makes sense to assume that Microsoft isn’t expecting a new console of its own until 2027 at the earliest. ,
