During the profile, Louis-Dreyfus was asked about Seinfeld’s critique of “far leftism and PC bullshit” and its impact on comedy.
Louis-Dreyfus responded when asked by the interviewer about Seinfeld’s comments, saying, “If you look at both comedy and drama through the eyes of 30 years ago, you can find certain pieces that don’t seem outdated.” “And I think that being aware of sensitivities is not a bad thing. It doesn’t mean that all comedy dies as a result of it. When I hear people complain about political correctness – and I understand why people might oppose it – but to me it’s an alarm bell, because sometimes it means something else. I believe that being aware of certain sensitivities is not a bad thing. I don’t know how else to say it.”
Louis-Dreyfus, who played the quirky and self-confident Elaine Benes in the hit comedy from 1990 to 1998, also spoke out about “political correctness” in comedy.
“My feeling about all of this is that political correctness, insofar as it equates to tolerance, is frankly fantastic,” she shared. “And of course I reserve the right to boo anyone who says something that offends me, while also respecting their right to free speech, right? But the bigger problem — and I think the real threat to art and subsequent creation — is the integration of money and power.”
Veep The star said she “can’t decide” whether comedy is better as a result of the changing landscape, but said artists today create from “a different perspective”.
He further said that Seinfeld Perhaps this would not be possible today.
