“People who keep pets and birds should be particularly careful. Anyone who has touched dead birds or animals should immediately report any symptoms of illness to health workers,” the release said.

Noting that influenza, cold and cough can be prevented through personal protective measures such as masks, social distancing and hand hygiene, the health department stressed the importance of following these measures as H1N1 cases are on the rise.

“People visiting the hospital should wear masks,” it said. Precautions should be taken against amoebic meningoencephalitis. “Bathing in stagnant water and diving should be avoided as far as possible, as cases of this disease have been reported in Kerala. Water in theme parks and swimming pools should be properly chlorinated to keep it clean,” it said.
