Lactation Cookies

As some of our readers know, I welcomed my second son, Hugo, into our family this summer. And just like with my first son, I’m going to be breastfeeding again for a while. Although I love the bonding and health benefits of breastfeeding, I have to admit that I’m one of those women who struggles with milk production. So I thought I’d share this recipe for lactation cookies that I often make for myself and have made for new mom friends before. They’re delicious, full of helpful ingredients and super easy to make.

While I love this breastfeeding cookie recipe, I also want to say that always consult your doctor or lactation consultant for anything specific to your body and as a source of medical advice. This is just a cookie recipe that I find helps my milk production, so I’m happy to share it if it helps you. And if you’re a new mom reading this who can’t or doesn’t want to breastfeed, I believe feeding is best and formula is a wonderful invention that I also use with my babies.

guidance

In a medium-sized bowl whisk together the dry ingredients: oats, brewer’s yeast, flour, baking soda, and salt.

In a large bowl, cream together the softened butter and sugar. Then add the eggs, milk, and vanilla extract, mixing well.

Mix the dry ingredients into the wet ingredients until a dough forms. Then add the walnuts and chocolate chips.

Spoon the cookies onto a prepared baking sheet lined with parchment paper or a baking mat. Bake at 350°F (177°C) for 8-10 minutes. I like to bake these for 8 minutes, which produces a very soft center. They almost look like protein balls, but if you bake a few more minutes the edges will crisp up and the center will be more like a muffin. The texture is up to you!

You can also do it Form the cookie dough into balls And bake them in small batches as needed. Or even give the frozen dough to friends who are pregnant or who have recently had a baby.
