Microsoft Flight Sim pilot attempts to recreate historic Hindenburg flight to the USA – all 50 hours of it – and you can track her progress

Sometimes the Internet and gaming are enjoyable and useful only for a short period of time and this could be one of those moments.

red wing simulation in march launches its LZ129 airship For Microsoft Flight Simulator – LZ129 most famously known as the Hindenburg – still in action in one of aviation’s most infamous crashes in New Jersey in 1937. Now, for the last two days, an attempt has been made to fly the PzKpfwIIIAusfL/Lina, known as The Zeppelin Girl. Recreate your famous journey from Frankfurt to the USA in real time. The flight, which was expected to take about 30 hours but faced some technical difficulties along with winds and weather, is now looking like a 50-hour journey.

Keeping the large number of loyal followers updated about the trip with screenshots and flight updates, fans are able to track the flight radar style on a webpage called Volanta.

At the time of writing the flight is approaching Nova Scotia, just south of Newfoundland. 19 hours or so, The Zeppelin Girl estimated that she had about 35 hours to go on this historic ‘the first to cross the Atlantic in this ship’ journey.

posting on reddit The latest update reads, “She is still swimming! More or less on track, I expect to land in the next ~35 hours.

What happened till now? Yesterday evening after sunset on the French-German border, I suffered a malfunction of the gyrocompass I used for navigation. Luckily I saw it in time so my course deviation wasn’t too far. From now on, I more or less needed to rely on crew command to stay on course. With an accuracy of 20°, course deviation is certainly expected.

The power went out after about 10 hours. There seemed to be a problem with the generator, but the backup generator did not help here. I tried to find out the problem with the Redwing development team, but they are still unsure/working on the issue. Fortunately, the flight controls are all mechanical and the engines are diesel, so the only things passengers have to give up on their flights are electric lights and a few other amenities…

I’m being blown around in the Pacific Ocean but the winds are in my favor. “I’m a little concerned about my fuel reserves at this point, but I should at least get to Newfoundland or Nova Scotia so that if all else fails I can land en route to refuel.”
