Minecraft is getting a native PS5 version, which players can test right now

Minecraft is now going to be available on PlayStation 5. Microsoft-owned Mojang announced on thursday PS5 owners will soon get their own version, rather than having to play the PS4 version through the console’s backwards compatibility with that platform.

What does this mean? Generally, original versions perform better than backward-compatible or emulated versions because they are built for the hardware itself. “By developing the original version of Minecraft for PS5, we will be able to run the game more efficiently on PS5’s hardware,” Mojang said in the post announcing the new version.

The big picture is that Mojang — again, a Microsoft-owned company — is truly platform agnostic in terms of servicing and maintaining the 13-year-old standard bearer of sandbox survival-type games. Wherever gamers want to play Minecraft, they’ll keep it in the best possible shape there.

For now, this is the “Preview” version of Minecraft. That means PS5 owners of the (again, PS4) game can find the build by navigating to the Settings menu and then selecting “Preview.” Mojang notes that the preview includes New Tricky Trials UpdateThey’re previewing PS5-native Minecraft before releasing it because they want to get feedback from real users who play the game in general, specifically feedback on bug reports and other issues.

Because this is a preview version, multiplayer is limited to players on the same platform, in this case PS4 and PS5. The preview version of Minecraft for PlayStation 5 will not have access to the Minecraft Store. This FAQ on the official Minecraft page will answer other questions.
