The United States condemns the June 15 killing of Anastasio Tzibi Cal, the recently elected general secretary of the Guatemalan trade union at the Texapia II garment factory. We offer our condolences to his family, friends, and the Texapia II labor union at this difficult time. The United States supports all efforts by Guatemalan authorities to hold perpetrators accountable and ensure that workers can safely exercise their rights.

Attacks on Guatemalan trade unionists limit Guatemala’s potential for economic growth and undermine human rights in our global supply chains. The United States is committed to supporting workers’ rights in Guatemala through its programs and engagement with Guatemalan authorities. In addition to worker rights, the United States broadly supports safety efforts that enable everyone to live without fear of violence.
