They estimated that if current trends continue, by 2030, 60 percent of adults will engage in insufficient physical activity.

For the study, researchers analysed data on physical activity reported by adults (at least 18 years of age) in population-based surveys to estimate the number of adults with insufficient physical activity in 197 countries and territories from 2000 to 2022.

The team also found that both men and women aged 60 years and older across the world are engaging in insufficient physical activity.

Physical inactivity is known to increase the risk of developing non-communicable diseases, including diabetes and heart disease. According to the WHO, rising levels of physical activity coupled with an increasingly sedentary lifestyle are contributing to a rise in the incidence of these diseases and placing a burden on healthcare systems worldwide.

A 2023 Indian Council of Medical Research-India Diabetes (ICMR-INDIAB) study published in The Lancet Diabetes & Endocrinology journal estimated that 101 million people in India suffered from diabetes in 2021 and about 315 million had hypertension in the same year.

In addition, an estimated 254 million people are obese and 185 million have high levels of LDL or “bad” cholesterol, according to the study.
