A 13-year-old boy brandishing a gun was shot dead by police in New York – and the entire violence was captured on video.
The footage begins with three police officers chasing a teenager in the northern city of Utica on Friday night.
Officers grabbed the boy and pinned him to the ground in a residential area. A policeman can be seen standing outside a home and punching the boy while he lies on the front lawn. There was a brief scuffle before an officer shot the young man.
While the chaos unfolded, neighbors were outside their homes filming the incident with their cell phone cameras. You can hear their horrified reactions after the shooting. One man yelled, “Oh my god! Yo! He just shot him!”
The teenager was taken to a hospital, where he died.
In a statement posted on Facebook, Utica PD officials said officers stopped two teens as part of an investigation. But according to police, the 13-year-old fled on foot and police pursued him when he proceeded to pull out a gun.
This triggered a confrontation and the officer fired his gun, killing the boy.
Authorities have now launched an investigation into the police firing.
