No jewellery, cellphone use in ICU: Advisory to health workers – ET HealthWorld

New Delhi: Health workers should be given all types of… jewelery Below the elbow while on duty, the Center said in a fresh directive.

In instructions issued to the heads of all hospitals run by the Central Government, the Director General of Health Services (DGHS)Directorate General of Health Services) has also stressed the need to develop and implement a policy to restrict the use of mobile phone In patient areas and critical areas such as ICU, HDU, post-operative wards and operation rooms.

According to DGHS Atul Goel, there is enough evidence that wearing hand jewelery below the elbow increases the total number of microorganisms in the skin. “Use of mobile phones while on duty, especially in critical areas like ICU, HDU, post-operative wards and operation theatres, poses a risk of infection,” he said in his letter sent on April 9.

He suggested that the hospitals concerned may revise their SOPs (standard operating procedures) on hand hygiene and specifically mention where wrist watches are allowed. Similar guidelines are in place in other major hospitals globally, a senior doctor said.
