Novo Nordisk, Indonesia’s Bio Farma set to make insulin – ET HealthWorld | Pharma

Jakarta: Danish drugmaker Novo Nordisk has signed an agreement with Indonesia’s state-owned pharmaceutical company Bio Pharma To create Insulin to compete diabetes A senior biopharma official said on Wednesday that this is the biggest crisis in the South East Asian country.

The deal comes at a time when Novo, a major player in the global insulin market, has shifted its focus from its century-old focus on insulin to a new class of drugs. GLP-1 agonists. Novo is expanding efforts to address diabetes care in Asia, including a program to increase enrollment of children from India, Indonesia and other countries, the company said in its 2023 annual report.

Data from the International Diabetes Federation in 2021 shows that more than 19 million people in Indonesia have diabetes, representing 10.8% of its adult population of about 180 million.

Bio Pharma and Novo Nordisk have agreed to produce insulin in the country, Bio Pharma Deputy Chief Executive Officer Soleh Ayoubi told Reuters.

The investment value and timing of starting production are still being finalised, Soleh said, adding that this is Novo Nordisk’s first manufacturing deal in Indonesia.

Novo Nordisk will provide “expertise in diabetes treatments and insulin production,” while Bio Pharma will provide local manufacturing facilities, Bio Pharma said in a statement.

Srirekha Srinivasan, vice president and general manager of Novo Nordisk in Indonesia, said the deal “reinforces our commitment to Indonesia.”
