Readout on Meeting of the U.S.-China Working Group on Enhancing Climate Action in the 2020s – United States Department of State

On May 8–9, the United States hosted a meeting of the US-China Working Group on Scaling Up Climate Action in the 2020s in Washington, DC, co-led by John Podesta, Senior Advisor to the President for International Climate Policy. and Liu Zhenmin, the PRC’s Special Envoy for Climate Change, and includes relevant officials from both countries.

Recalling the temperature target of the Paris Agreement and reaffirming the importance of demonstrating its leadership, taking into account different national circumstances and pathways, both sides called on Parties to COP 28’s Global Stocktake Decision to set national goals by 2035. Both sides intend to host the second “Methane and Non-CO2 Greenhouse Gas Summit” at COP 29. Both sides are committed to promoting bilateral cooperation and building capacity on deploying reduction technologies as well as on the development and/or improvement of related MRV systems. And the standards aim to achieve significant methane emissions controls and reductions in 2020. Both sides expressed interest in the Methane Warning and Response System of the UNEP International Methane Emissions Observatory. They will also engage in technical cooperation and capacity building for measurement and reduction solutions of industrial N2O as well as other non-CO2 greenhouse gases, including tropospheric ozone precursors.

Recognizing the importance of developing the circular economy and resource efficiency in tackling the climate crisis, both sides look forward to further technical exchanges on the circular economy, including food loss and waste reduction, textile and recycling standards.

Both sides look forward to the US-China High-level Event on Subnational Climate Action to be held in Berkeley, CA on May 29-30.
