Secretary Antony J. Blinken and Maldivian Foreign Minister Moosa Zameer Before Their Meeting – United States Department of State

Secretary Blinken: Well, good morning, everyone. I am very pleased to welcome my colleague Minister Zameer from the Maldives to Washington, I think this is your first visit in this position. Welcome, welcome, welcome.

For us, the Maldives is an important partner, and we want to make sure that we are a good partner to the Maldives. We are working together to make sure that we have a free and open Indo-Pacific region. We stand together to tackle the challenge posed by climate change – a challenge to lives and livelihoods that we both take very seriously, and where the Maldives is a leader and I hope we are a good, effective partner. We are working together to make sure that we have a safe maritime domain, and basically work together to try to build a prosperous future for our people.

Thank you so much for being here today so that we can not only continue this work, but deepen it and make the partnership between the Maldives and the United States even stronger. You are most welcome.

Foreign Minister Zamir: Thank you, Mr. Secretary. I am very pleased to be in this beautiful city today, and I bring greetings from the Maldives, the President, and the people of the Maldives. And I really look forward to building a very fruitful relationship with the United States, and, I think, we have had such a relationship in previous governments as well. So, we will continue to work very closely together. I think our teams have been in touch with each other over the last few months, and since we took office, and we really appreciate the fact that there have been very high-level exchanges between our two countries since we came into government. And I am confident that whatever challenges we have in the future, we will face them together, and we will be able to overcome them.

Secretary Blinken: Thank you very much. Thank you everyone.
