Foreign Minister Antony J. Blinken met with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Jerusalem today. The Secretary discussed ongoing efforts to reach an immediate ceasefire in Gaza as part of the hostage agreement and stressed that it is Hamas that stands in the way of a ceasefire. The Secretary discussed the improvement in humanitarian assistance delivery to Gaza since the call between President Biden and Prime Minister Netanyahu on April 4 and reiterated the importance of accelerating and maintaining that improvement. Secretary Blinken reaffirmed the US commitment to Israel’s security. They also discussed the need to avoid further escalation of the conflict and briefed the Prime Minister on ongoing efforts to ensure lasting, sustainable peace in the region. The Secretary reiterated the United States’ clear position on Rafah.
