Hello and welcome to TechCrunch Space. We’ll have to wait a little longer for the return of Boeing’s Starliner capsule from the International Space Station — the capsule and its two astronauts will remain at the station for twice as long as originally scheduled, to give mission operators extra time to perform tests on the spacecraft. Story of the Week

We may be entering a renaissance for human spaceflight research, as record numbers of private citizens are heading to space — and scientists are improving techniques for collecting data on these courageous test subjects. A sign that the renaissance is imminent came earlier this week, when the journal Nature published paper storage It details the physical and mental changes experienced by the four-person Inspiration4 crew nearly three years ago.

This Week in Space History

Sally Ride became the first American woman in space on June 18, 1983, when she flew on Challenger’s STS-7 mission.

“The fact that I was going to be the first American woman to go into space carried great expectations with it.” Ride said this in an interview in 2008, on the 25th anniversary of her flight. “That became clear the day I was told I was selected for the crew. I was taken into (Johnson Space Center Director) Chris Kraft’s office. He wanted to talk to me and make sure I knew what I was getting into before I went on the crew. I was so amazed at being on the crew and going into space that I remember very little of what he said.”
