The Gambia Endorses the Proliferation Security Initiative – United States Department of State

The Republic of The Gambia has expressed its support for the Proliferation Security Initiative (PSI) to Morocco. The event was held in Marrakech, Morocco, after participating in the PSI African Political Meeting and Outreach Event jointly organized by Morocco and the United States on January 31-February 2, 2024. The event was held in Marrakech, Morocco. The United States welcomes The Gambia’s support and participation in the Initiative and looks forward to working with the Government of The Gambia to advance the PSI’s counter-proliferation goals and its Statement of Principles for Prohibition. The Gambia is the 113th State to endorse the PSI.

The highlight of the PSI African Political Meeting and Outreach Event was the issuance of the Marrakesh Declaration by Morocco and the United States. The Marrakesh Declaration underscored the initiative’s importance in addressing the threats posed by the trafficking of weapons of mass destruction (WMD) and related items within the African region and encouraged regional countries’ support of the PSI. The Gambia is the seventh country to endorse the PSI at or after the PSI African Political Meeting and Outreach Event, bringing the total number of African supporters to 13.

Launched in Krakow, Poland, in 2003, the PSI celebrates its 20th anniversary in May 2023. States become part of the PSI by publicly endorsing the PSI’s Statement of Principles of Prohibition, making voluntary political commitments to prevent and stop the shipment of illicit WMD, delivery systems and related materials to and from states and non-state actors of proliferation concern. States endorsing the PSI also adopt streamlined procedures for rapid information exchange and strengthen relevant national and international laws and frameworks.
