Undetected thyroid diseases can lead to major health complications: Experts – ET HealthWorld

New Delhi: ASSOCHAM CSR CouncilUnder the Illness to Wellness initiative, on the eve of World Thyroid Day, a panel discussion titled ‘Thyroid Matters: In Health and Disease’ was organised with the primary goal of raising awareness about thyroid. thyroid disease And stressed the need to encourage early treatment of thyroid disorders.

The panel included Dr (Professor) Chandrakant Sambhaji Pandav, member and former head of the National Nutrition Campaign Council. Community Medical Center, All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS, New Delhi), Ministry of Health and Family WelfareGovernment of India, Dr. Subhash K Wangnoo, Senior Consultant – Endocrinologist & Diabetologist, Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals, New Delhi and Dr. Mudit Sabharwal, Consultant, Diabetes & Endocrinology, Fortis La Femme Multi Specialty Hospital and Director & Consultant, Diabetologist, Dharma Diabetes & Metabolic Clinics, Delhi & NCR. The session was moderated by Dr. Rajesh Kesari, Founder & Director, Total Care Control, Delhi-NCR and EC Member, RSSDI.

Dr. Pandav explained the importance of awareness to tackle the rise in thyroid diseases. He also explained that adequate amounts of iodised salt are required to avoid thyroid diseases.

He said, “Without awareness you cannot move forward. Awareness is essential for early detection of thyroid diseases and this can prevent major diseases. Historically, iodine deficiency has been a major cause of thyroid disorders. Although iodisation programmes have reduced the prevalence of goiter, iodine deficiency still exists in some areas.”

Anil Rajput, Chairman, ASSOCHAM National CSR Council said, “With the rising incidence of thyroid related health issues, awareness needs to be raised and immediate steps taken to effectively tackle this challenge. Thyroid disease affects both men and women, with the incidence being higher in women, which necessitates women to get their thyroid checked. Gender-sensitive approach should be looked at in more detail. On World Thyroid Day, it is important to know Raising public awareness I am passionate about spreading awareness about thyroid disorders across all age-groups and I believe that together we can empower individuals, families and communities to tackle thyroid diseases effectively and move towards a more healthy and resilient nation.”

Talking about the symptoms, Dr Sabharwal said there are two types of thyroid disorders: hypothyroidism (symptoms include – fatigue, weight gain, dry skin, intolerance to cold) and hyperthyroidism (symptoms include – weight loss, intolerance to heat, increased appetite).

He said, “Simple exercises like Surya Namaskar can help control/prevent hyperthyroidism. After Covid-19, we have seen a rise in hyperthyroidism cases. We should remember that cholesterol and diabetes are also linked to thyroid, so people should adopt a healthy lifestyle to avoid diseases like thyroid.”

Dr Wangnu said that unexpected weakness, Postpartum depression Lethargy and lethargy are symptoms of thyroid disorder in women that must be looked out for.

“The thyroid does a lot of work in helping metabolism and maintaining blood pressure, body temperature and heart rate. Pregnant women also need to be very careful. Postpartum depression is something that women suffer from due to thyroid problems. If it is detected late, it can affect the intelligence of babies,” he said.
