United States – Italy Consultation on the Indo-Pacific – United States Department of State

The United States hosted Italy for a dialogue on the Indo-Pacific on May 21 in Washington, DC. Deputy Secretary of State Kurt Campbell and Italian Foreign Ministry Secretary General Riccardo Guariglia co-chaired the talks. The US delegation included senior government officials from the State Department, the National Security Council, and the Department of Defense.

The United States and Italy discussed joint priorities for advancing a free and open Indo-Pacific in the region, including maintaining peace and stability in the South China Sea and the Taiwan Strait, Russia’s use in the war against Ukraine. Urging the PRC to end the supply of dual-use goods, joint efforts to resolve the worsening crisis in Burma, maritime and security cooperation in the Indo-Pacific region, regional clean energy initiatives, and climate change.

Deputy Secretary Campbell and Secretary-General Guariglia also took the opportunity to discuss the crises in Israel and Gaza, holding Russia accountable for the war against Ukraine, and security in North Africa, as well as other priorities of Italy’s G7 Presidency .
