Chicago: American health officials gave this warning on Friday dairy workers H5N1 remains a threat bird flu virus that is infecting dairy herds, and urged them to wear protective gear to avoid infection.
America CDC Farmers, workers and emergency responders are urged to wear appropriate protective gear when coming into direct or close physical contact with sick birds, livestock, feces, raw milk or contaminated surfaces.
The warning matches a letter published online to the New England Journal of Medicine, detailing the case of a dairy worker who was infected with the virus in March and developed an eye infection known as conjunctivitis. .
Bird virus infection in humans is rare, and the dairy worker’s case represents only the second known infection in the United States. This follows the worrying spread of the virus in various mammal species, which has raised concerns that widespread contact between people could cause the virus to spread more easily between people and lead to a global pandemic.
