Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 public beta scrapped as devs go all in for September launch

A post from Saber Interactive on Steam says that the public beta test scheduled for the highly anticipated September launch of Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 has been cancelled as it would “take the development team away from preparing for the full launch”.

The launch date is set for September 9th, so time is certainly short, but without a public beta to bring more valuable information it could be argued that some issues could crop up at launch that could have been fixed beforehand.

As you might expect, some corners of the internet suggest that this is because the game isn’t ready, but when we last looked at it, we found that Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 could be one of the best games to shoulder this licence to date.

“Over the past few weeks, we’ve seen incredible enthusiasm for the game both online and at shows during the North American tour. Our teams at Focus and Sabre are truly overwhelmed by your passion, and we’ve loved seeing the fan art, reactions, and memes you’ve shared so far.

Space Marine 2 is almost ready. We are now focused on fully optimising, polishing and fixing any remaining issues before launch on September 9. This means we will not be running a public online beta, as this would distract the development teams from preparing for the full launch, and our priority is to ensure the best possible experience on release.

We know this is disappointing news for some of you. As a thank you to those interested in participating, players who register via online signup before June 28, 2024, midnight Paris time, will receive the limited Bolt Pistol skin below.

So, a small gun skin as an apology for canceling it is hardly going to please those who are disappointed, but with the way the studio is speaking about the beta cancellation above, it at least seems like they think it’s almost ready for a prime time appearance.
