“We have prioritized reducing the impacts of air pollution and hazardous chemicals, strengthening health facilities to climate change, and focusing on clean and adequate drinking water, basic sanitation and hygiene,” he said.

Practical and innovative methods health sector Steps to combat land restoration, desertification and drought include integrating health impact assessments into land use planning processes.

Wazed said this could include assessing potential health impacts of proposed projects on air and water quality, food security, and threats such as drought and desertification.

It also includes implementing green building practices and sustainable infrastructure in healthcare facilities to reduce their environmental footprint and contribute to land restoration efforts. This may include incorporating green spaces into hospital designs to promote healing and wellness.

Wazed said there should be community-based health promotion, empowering communities to take ownership of land restoration and conservation initiatives through participatory health promotion programmes.

He also stressed the need to build climate-resilient health care systems to better withstand the impacts of climate change, including drought and desertification, and to train health workers in climate adaptation and emergency response strategies.
